The biggest general store in the nation, by the Glenmore's own account.
The Glenmore tells its own history at length, and most of it is not about the bar. It is about the store the building started as, the grand hotel that stood across the road, and the drowning in South Bay that put Big Moose Lake into American literature.
- The store
- The building that is the Glenmore today was originally the Big Moose Supply Company - 'in its day, the biggest general store in the nation', as the Glenmore puts it. The long low front on Glenmore Road is still the store's front.
- 1906
- Grace Brown drowned in the South Bay of Big Moose Lake and Chester Gillette was convicted and executed for it. Theodore Dreiser's An American Tragedy came out of it, and after that the film A Place in the Sun, with Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters and Montgomery Clift.
- 1950
- The original Glenmore Hotel - four storeys of Adirondack architecture directly across the street, with a dining room that seated 200, a tea room, a game room and a soda fountain - burned down.
- 1970
- Carlton and Marilyn Muller came up from Whitesboro, bought the Glenmore, and ran it with their three sons, Carlton Jr., Stephen and Robert.
- 1989
- The Mullers leased the place out and moved to Florida. Nine years later the youngest son, Robert, came back and reopened it his way: comfort food, no fine-dining attitude, no embroidered napkins, shoes and shirts occasionally in short supply.
- Since the mid-2010s
- The sign reads Duffy's at the Glenmore. The bar, the tavern menu and the rooms upstairs carried on under the Duffy name.
The bar
The Glenmore's own line about its bar has not changed in twenty years: the prices are reasonable and the drinks are poured with a heavy hand.
The rooms upstairs
The Glenmore has always been a hotel as well as a bar. Every room is private, the bath is shared the way it is in a bed and breakfast, and there is a commons room downstairs with a couch and a television. The Glenmore's own line for it: the coffee is brewed fresh in the morning when you wake up to watch the sunrise over Big Moose Lake. Call the bar for what is open this season.
